This kit totally made my son's 2nd birthday a lot of fun! Here are a few things you need to know about this kit:
1)The kit comes with a bonus dvd hidden in the plastic faceplate. We almost stuck it to the cake, but my niece who was helping put it together was wondering what the paper was that was attached to the faceplate.
2) it will work better with a firmer cake like a pound cake. We used a Duncan Hines mix, and the cake was good, but the cake kind of collapsed once the pieces were stacked.
3) The directions have exact dimensions for the cake. My wife even measured with a ruler, but the top part of the cake needs to be cut too fit the top plastic piece.
This kit will make your little one's birthday!

The Thomas 3d Cake Kit was just what it said it was. It came very quickly and I got all the parts however, no directions came with it. I had to go online to another site and find very specific directions. It was a ton of work and I ended up having my Mother-in-law, who is retired and very crafty, make the cake. She spent hours and a lot of money fiding all the right cake making tools and the right frosting colors to make the cake. It turned out just like the picture and my 2 year old Son loved it. It was AWESOME! If you do not have the time and/or the cake decorating skills, I would suggest going to Safeway they have the Thomas Circus cake for $20-$30 it was fantastic too (we had 2 parties)! My Son loved both of his cakes. The Safeway route was not near the trouble or the cost. If you are feeling ambitious than this is a great project for you!

I was pretty disappointed with the instructions that came with the Thomas the Train Kit. This wasn't my first rodeo as far as making cakes and decorating them goes. I had family that had flown across the country from FL to CA for my son's 3rd birthday. They only get to make the trip once a year. My 1st attempt at the cake was a huge flop. I wasted a whole day, the last day of my family's visit (between baking, cooling, mixing icing & cutting) trying to make the cake. The end result was no Thomas the Train cake on my son's birthday and a few tears shed.
My second attempt went much better. I went straight to the instructions online, scrapped looking at the instruction part and focused only on the pictures as a reference. Then I sat down and took measurements of my own. Use the coal box as your measurement for the width of A & C. Use Thomas' face as the measurement for the width on B. And use the wheels as your reference for the height of each layer. Butter cream between the...Read more
